Welcome Home

In the older part of Destin, away from the cookie cutter houses and condos that have sprung up in recent years, a tiny bar rests on the harbor. KJ’s is a place many locals like to call home.

Although rough in its appearance inside and out, KJ’s has more charm than any bar in Destin. Those stepping through the doors of this local joint are in for a real treat as they set their eyes on hundreds of ladies’ bras and dollars pinned to the ceilings.

Much like the popular sitcom, Cheers, KJ’s is a place where “everybody knows your name.” Perhaps that is why the same faces surface again and again a little drunker each time.

There is no doubt that KJ’s attracts Destin’s most unusual characters, bringing them together under one roof. In any celebration of the unique, the unexpected is lurking around the corner. You will see it all at KJ’s.

The atmosphere and people are not the only attraction at KJ’s. Everyone is raving about the house band – Roshambo. Roshambo features the musical talents of owner Jim Couch on guitar, Ron Pekrul on drums and Adrian Howland on bass. Together they rock the house every Friday, Saturday and Monday with music from the Violent Femmes, Weezer, Ramones, and The Killers, among others.

The dance floor is always packed. Old and young bar-goers break it down like you have never seen before. Some daring ladies climb their way on to the Power Stage where they are sure to get the attention of everyone in the bar. And, if they are cute enough, Jim buys them a shot of Jaegermeister – the drink of choice at this local joint. I must add in a word of warning – no men are allowed on the Power Stage.

As for a little piece of history – before KJ’s became home to Destin locals, local fishermen used to tear through the doors of what was then known as Kangaroo Jack’s to buy fish bait and other supplies. Jim decided to keep the initials since that is part of the bar’s character.

KJ’s is definitely an experience that everyone must share at one time or another. It takes a special person to appreciate the weathered beauty of this place, but I invite you to take a look sometime.

KJ’s is open seven days a week from 8 p.m. to late. The band has been known to play as late as 3:30 a.m.

Drink Specials!
Every night KJ’s sells a different shot for $1.50. Make sure to check the blackboard by the bar when you enter.

Location
KJ’s is hard to find! You must navigate through the restaurants and shops that litter Highway 98. The twisting driveway leading to KJ’s leaves little room to be desired. Potholes and gravel give your car a proper introduction to the mysterious bar that sits opposite from Boathouse Oyster Bar. And, once you manage to carve your way through the entryway, you have to navigate yourself through the parking lot … Good luck!
